Dopo la nostra gita a San Gimignano presso l'Azienda Agricola Palagetto (il racconto fotografico qui), abbiamo preparato una breve lista di parole e espressioni per parlare di vino in inglese. Enjoy!
Structure of wine.
ACIDITY
and derivates, such as ACID o ACIDIC
In italian "acidità", it's what makes wine refreshing.
BALANCE
and derivates, such as BALANCED
In italian "equilibrio". A good wine is well balanced: it means that all its main components - acid, alcohol, sugars and tannins - are equal.
TANNIN
It is derived from grape skins and seeds. It acts as a natural preservative that helps the wine age.
BODY
Well, you know the general meaning of the word "body". Related to wine, it's simply the structure of the wine, which could be light-bodied, medium-bodied or full-bodied.
Color of wine.
A white wine could be:
pale yellow, pale green, golden
A red wine could be:
bright red, dark red, purple, ruby red
It could be also
DIRTY
in italian "sporco", as a result of poor winemaking usually by bad barrels or corks.
Aroma and taste of wine.
FRUIT-FORWARD
To describe the dominant notes of fruit in the nose and mouth. Wine could smell and taste like fresh strawberries, raspberry jam, baked apples, blueberry, prune, and many other fruits.
EARTHY
To describe odors or flavors reminiscent of damp soil, forest floor, mushrooms, or wet leaves.
SAVORY
A wine with less dominant fruit characteristics. It smells and tastes like olives, dried herbs, leather, or tobacco.
